Dwarka Has Too Many Stories to Be Just a Temple Town

Ask someone what Dwarka is famous for and the answer will probably come quickly: Krishna, Dwarkadhish Temple and pilgrimage. But stay a little longer and the city starts becoming harder to explain in a single sentence.

There is the story of Krishna building his legendary kingdom. There is the belief that the ancient city eventually disappeared beneath the sea. There are stories connected with Rukmini, Sudama, Shiva, the Gomti and the coastline. And then there are archaeological discoveries that have given the region another reason to look towards the waters surrounding the city.

This mixture is what makes Dwarka so fascinating. One of the enduring traditions says that Krishna established his city here and that, after his departure from the mortal world, the city was swallowed by the sea. The story alone would be enough to make Dwarka intriguing. But submerged structures discovered off the coast have added an archaeological dimension to the conversation around the ancient city.

And then another story takes you away from the sea and towards Rukmini. Her separate temple is connected with the legend of Sage Durvasa and the curse that separated her from Krishna. Travel further and Nageshwar introduces Shiva through the story of Supriya and the demon Daruka. Bet Dwarka brings another chapter around Krishna and Sudama.

Even the Gomti waterfront has its own traditions and rituals, giving visitors another way to experience the spiritual character of the city.

This is why Dwarka becomes more interesting the longer you stay. It refuses to tell you just one story. You can come as a pilgrim and experience the temples. You can come as a traveller and explore the coastline. You can come because you are fascinated by mythology, or because you want to understand why an ancient city is associated with a sea that may have swallowed parts of its past.

And you can simply come because you want to see the place for yourself.

That may be Dwarka’s greatest attraction. It does not ask you to choose between history, faith, legend and travel. It puts them all on the same road.

And somewhere along that road, you stop being a visitor looking at Dwarka from the outside.
