RAMESHWARAM

The Dham of Karma Purification & Penance — Where Rama Worshipped Shiva

Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu

🛕 About the Temple

Rameshwaram is the sacred place where Lord Rama worshipped Shiva to atone for the sin of killing Ravana (a brahmin), teaching us that even God must atone for actions and seek purification. The two lingas — Sita's sand linga made with pure love and Hanuman's stone linga carried with pure devotion — together teach that God values love over perfection, and devotion above all else.

Separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel, Rameshwaram holds immense significance in the Ramayana. It is the place where Lord Rama created a bridge across the sea to rescue Sita.

The 22 Sacred Theerthas (Holy Water Wells): The most unique ritual of Rameshwaram is bathing/sprinkling water of the 22 theerthas (sacred wells) within the temple complex. Each theertham has a different name, different story and a specific healing or spiritual property, that transforms one. By bathing / sprinkling water of the 22 theerthas, you essentially undergo a complete spiritual detoxification and rejuvenation — body, mind and soul, leading to cosmic success.

🌺 THE 22 THEERTHAS

Each theertham /well has a story, a deity, and a specific karmic function:
